What is a third-party citation?

A source an AI answer cites that the brand does not own: a review site, a community thread, a video, a professional post or a news page.

Most of what an AI answer is built from sits off a brand's own website. On our own 62-query panel (16–18 September 2026), 27 of the 56 answers that cited anything (48%) cited YouTube, LinkedIn, Reddit or Quora.

That makes placement on those sources part of marketing rather than a favour from the press: being present, accurately described and worth quoting where the engines already look.
