AEO vs GEO vs SEO: What Differs, and What the Acronyms Hide
By Firoz Azees
Three acronyms, one invoice. Agencies use AEO and GEO interchangeably while selling the same deliverables. Here is what genuinely differs at the mechanism level, and the question that separates a real offer from a renamed one.
5 min readThree acronyms are being sold into the same budget line. SEO is familiar. AEO, answer engine optimization. GEO, generative engine optimization. Agencies use the last two interchangeably, and in our measurement of 10 Dubai agencies the deliverables listed under each were close to identical. That does not mean the distinction is fake. It means most sellers have not done the work of making it real.
The short version
SEO optimises for a ranked list of links. AEO optimises for being the source an answer engine reuses. GEO optimises for appearing inside a generated answer. The mechanisms genuinely differ: ranking is page-level and positional, while generated-answer selection is passage-level and reassembled at query time. The Princeton GEO research, Aggarwal et al., measured passage-level changes moving visibility by up to 40% in controlled tests. What is usually fake is the offer, not the category: ask any agency which deliverable changes between their AEO package and their SEO package, and listen for silence.
What each one optimises for
SEO
A ranked list. Ten blue links, positions that hold for weeks, and a click as the outcome. The unit of competition is the page, and the feedback loop runs through rank trackers anyone can buy.
AEO
Being the source an answer engine reuses. The unit is the passage, not the page. Selection happens when the question is asked, and the outcome is a citation under an answer rather than a click.
GEO
Appearing inside the generated text. The unit is your entity as the model holds it, and the outcome is your name in the sentence. This is the hardest of the three to buy, because it depends on the model having a reason to prefer you.
Where the mechanisms diverge
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unit of competition | Page | Passage | Entity |
| Selection moment | Index time, ranked | Query time, retrieved | Query time, generated |
| Stability | Weeks to months | Volatile | Volatile |
| Public scoreboard | Rank trackers | None | None |
| Outcome | Click | Citation | Named recommendation |
| Main lever | Links and relevance | Structure and evidence | Distinctiveness |
Our own measurements show how volatile the right two columns are. We ran the same 8 Dubai buyer questions 52 days apart and the leaders turned over completely: one agency fell from a 50% citation share to 0%, another from 37.5% named to 0%, and only 20% of the July field appeared at all in September. SEO positions do not move at that speed.
The shape of an honest AEO deliverable
- An answer block in the first 130 words of every target page, quantified and sourced. Passage-level work, not page-level.
- One self-contained block per sub-question, so a passage can be lifted without the surrounding argument.
- A measurement cadence of 60 days, because a single reading in a volatile system proves nothing.
- A split report of named versus cited, since those are different outcomes bought with different work.
- An off-domain plan, because on our 62-query panel (16-18 September 2026) almost half the answers that cited anything - 27 of 56 - cited YouTube, LinkedIn, Reddit or Quora, and no on-domain deliverable reaches them.
If an agency's AEO package contains none of those five and instead lists keyword research, blog posts and backlinks, you are buying SEO with a new label.
The test question
Ask: "Which deliverable in your AEO package does not appear in your SEO package?" A real practice names the answer block standard, the passage structure, the probe cadence and the placement work. A renamed practice describes the same content calendar in newer words. We apply the same test to ourselves, and our own AI Search Visibility reading is published rather than asserted.
Questions buyers ask
Is GEO just AEO with a different name? In most agency usage, yes. At the mechanism level they separate: AEO targets being the source, GEO targets being in the sentence. Our panel found agencies whose pages were cited 4 times while the brand was named once, which is the distinction made visible.
Do I need all three? You need SEO if clicks still matter to your model, and you need the other two if your buyers ask assistants before they ask Google. Most UAE businesses we measure need both, funded separately.
Does good SEO produce AEO for free? Partly. Clean, fast, well-structured pages are easier to retrieve. What SEO does not give you is the passage discipline or the off-domain half.
Which is hardest? GEO, because it depends on the model having a reason to name you rather than the category average. That is an Entity and a Voice problem before it is a technical one.
Why do the acronyms get muddled? Because the category is young and the vocabulary arrived faster than the practice. The word AEO alone is worse than muddled: it also means Authorised Economic Operator in customs and a US clothing retailer, which we found polluting our own query research.
How do I know which one my buyers need? Ask them what they typed last time they shortlisted a vendor. Then ask the engines the same thing and read the source list. As Firoz Azees puts it: "a measured zero is a work order; a flattering estimate is a story you tell yourself."
What should I refuse to pay for? A guarantee of position in an AI answer. Our 52-day churn data shows why it cannot be honoured, and the full list of limits is worth reading before any contract.
