From visible demonstrations in small hunter-gatherer bands to academic degrees in the knowledge economy, talent signaling systems have grown progressively disconnected from the behaviors they claim to measure.
This disconnection now costs the global economy $800 billion to $1.2 trillion annually in misallocated human capital. Yet the solution remains elusive because we’ve been asking the wrong question. The problem isn’t that our signals are inaccurate. It’s that they measure the wrong things entirely.

The Industrial Revolution shattered local labor markets. Factories needed thousands of workers. Urban companies needed clerks, managers, engineers. How do you evaluate a candidate from another city? Another country? Someone you’ve never met?
The solution was standardization: create universal signals that could travel. Schools, colleges, and testing agencies became credentialing monopolies—centralized authorities whose stamps supposedly certified capability.
This solved the scale problem but created new pathologies:

Why? Because we solved discovery (finding people) without solving validation (confirming capabilities). The flood of accessible candidates created a new problem: information overload.

Now we face a unique moment: the old system is demonstrably broken, the need for replacement is urgent, and the technology finally exists to build something better.
The choice is not whether this transition happens—AI has made credentials obsolete and made behavioral measurement feasible.
The signal revolution is inevitable. But its form is not.
We can build multiple competing indices with open standards, transparent algorithms, individual data rights, and continuous auditing—creating infrastructure that makes capabilities visible regardless of how they were developed.
Or we can drift into proprietary platforms, opaque scoring, surveillance architecture, and new forms of gatekeeping—reproducing current inequalities in digital form.
